Jim Key – Smartest Horse that Ever Was

David Sanderson Horses in History

A motherless foal who quickly became attached to his human caregiver (William Key) – the story of Jim Key is one that is not very well known. Jim was able to do math problems, spell names, share his political preferences, and retrieve a coin from the bottom of a large glass jar filled with water. Skeptical audience members could give Jim instructions and, without his handler’s involvement, the horse could fulfill the request correctly most of the time.

After witnessing the horse act, President William McKinley said, “This is certainly the most astonishing and entertaining exhibition I have ever witnessed.”

Jim Key is certainly a horse worth remembering, as are many of the horses here at Parklane. We hope you can meet some of these amazing animals here at our equestrian center!
